I know this thread is a bit old, but I just wanted to point out that there's only an activation limit with the GFWL legacy method if you want to play online. If you want to play single player using a local (offline) profile, you can install the game on as many machines you want to, and you never even have to touch the Internet. I don't know if that's how it is with the Steam version of Lost Planet Colonies, but I know that's how the retail version works. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5, Dark Souls, and a few more work the same way in retail (although I'm pretty sure all those require Steam to be running if you buy the Steam versions).

I'm more concerned about not being able to activate the game. GFWL needs a one time activation with their service, otherwise we'd all have to find cracks which I'd rather not do since those sites tend to be ripe with viruses. Plus, some folks just can't get GFWL to work ever. I remember it took me 4 installs just to get Batman AA working and I was afraid I met the activation limit. Finished the game ( not the DLC ), but I'm glad that game is switching to Steamworks in case my son wants to play that when he gets older.
